Embrace the Ace: Cleavers Cheesesteak Shop Deserves to be on the Top of Everyone’s List

Writer: Joe OtisJoe Otis

There are certain victories in life that stand out above the rest, moments when everything aligns perfectly and you come out on top. For me, one of those moments was winning my friend group's Cheesesteak Tasting competition. Let me take you through the delicious journey that led to my triumph.

The rules were simple yet tantalizingly competitive: each participant had to bring two cheesesteaks with American cheese from different PA and South Jersey spots. These cheesesteaks would be anonymously tasted and judged while having an impartial slicer, each steaks identities concealed until the end. The prize? Pure culinary glory.

I decided to showcase two iconic Philly establishments: Sonny's in Old City, known for its classic taste, and Cleavers in Rittenhouse Square, my secret weapon. Cleavers isn't just a cheesesteak; it's a behemoth of flavor and size. Picture this: tender ribeye, generously smothered in gooey American cheese, nestled in a perfectly toasted seeded roll. It's a feast for the senses.

As the tasting unfolded, whispers swirled that John's Roast Pork might be the frontrunner. Little did my friends know, it was Cleavers that was stealing their hearts and taste buds. The scores were tallied, and to everyone's surprise, including mine, Cleavers emerged victorious. Its bold flavors and generous portions left an indelible mark on our taste buds.

However, I was puzzled when I later checked Yelp. Cleavers, with all its greatness, had a modest rating of 4.1. It seems the very critics who scoff at touristy spots like Pat's and Geno's have overlooked this hidden gem. (To be honest, one of the best cheesesteaks I’ve ever had was at Pat’s after a Monday night Eagles loss to the Packers in 2016. It helped ease the defeat.) So consider this my rallying cry to all cheesesteak aficionados: give Cleavers a chance. Step away from the usual suspects and experience a cheesesteak that truly deserves your attention.

Winning the Cheesesteak Tasting competition wasn't just about claiming victory; it was about introducing my friends to a cheesesteak experience they'll never forget. And for that, Cleavers, with its unparalleled ribeye and cheese-drenched perfection, will always hold a special place in my culinary hall of fame.

Next time you're in Philly, make it a point to visit Cleavers. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you.
